'Bigfoot hunter' calls police to see if it's legal to shoot mythical creature

The Stevens County Sheriff's Office in Washington state revealed that an out of town hunter made the inquiry on March 19.

A self-proclaimed 'Bigfoot hunter' in the US is asking the police if it's legal to shoot the mythical creature if he finds it.

The Stevens County Sheriff's Office in Washington state shared that a hunter from out of town asked if he could open fire on the creature. However, he said he wouldn't shoot a female Bigfoot.

The office also mentioned that the department responsible for hunting, fish and wildlife, quickly passed him onto the police, reports the Daily Star.

Writing on Facebook, the police said: "[The caller] will be coming into the area mid-April and wants to hunt in the Big Meadow Lake area.

"I tried to refer him to Fish and Wildlife, but they had referred him to us

"Mr. [redacted] has concerns about how to stay legal while hunting [in] the Big Meadow Lake area because our state regulations are unclear regarding Sasquatch hunts.

"[He] needs to know: 1. Is it illegal in Stevens County to shoot Sasquatch? 2. Is a regular hunting license enough to keep his Sasquatch hunt legal?"

"If he does not hear from someone today, he intends to call back tomorrow."

At the end of the Facebook post, the Stevens County Sheriff's Office made its response clear.

"So our Patrol Chief called the inquiring party back to pass on two important pieces of information: Meadow Lake is in Pend Oreille County Sheriff jurisdiction and he would have more information on that topic," the office said.

"2. There are no Sasquatch in Stevens County. We know this because one of our deputies would have accidently hit one with a patrol car by now!"

Apparently, Skamania County in Washington state has a Local Ordinance originally passed on 1st April 1969 (Ordinance 69-01) to protect Bigfoot. Despite the 1st April date it is actually valid legislation, which was amended in 1984. It declares the wilful killing of a Sasquatch to be a gross misdemeanor, punishable by jail time and fines, aiming to protect the creature (and manage hunters).

On another note, the Loch Ness monster has no formal protection but since 2001 there has been a voluntary ‘code of practice’ developed as a contingency by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to protect the monster. Although SNH say the code is "partly serious, partly fun" it stipulates that if Nessie (or actually any new species of animal) were discovered in the loch, it should not be removed, but a DNA sample should be taken and the animal released, unharmed.

There is also limited legal protection derived from the 1912 Scottish Protection of Animals Act which has been replaced by the 2006 Animal Health and Welfare Act, but only for wild animals which have been taken captive. Hunting, which may lead to captivity (or death), is not specifically prohibited or licensed but any search (particularly one involving underwater technology) must not cause harm to the environment or any potential creature.

Our state law changed a dozen years ago or so. Now, any animal not listed as a game animals are protected. The law changed after an elk was spotted running loose in IL. We have no native elk. Someone supposedly harvested the elk, which was legal at the time. “Feelings” were hurt and a new law was born. The law has unintended consequences. We don’t have many (any?) feral pigs in IL luckily. Not yet. And they are now protected due to this new law.🤷🏼
