Black silver

Stopped by one of the ghost town sites I hunt today. Only stayed about 45 minutes but it gave up some silver. Dug a (black silver) 1877 s seated dime and a few feet away a 1869 shield nickel.

I love those oddly tarnished dark silvers. My experience has been that means it sat in poorly drained soil.

Forgot to mention the shield. I sure wish I could get over one of those. I've dug probably 100 Vs and 100 buffs in the 3 years I've been at it... but, the shield eludes me (dang it).

Joe hasn't been out much and they have a newborn now. I suppose he will be out in time but priorities have changed.

Sounds like an awesome place to hunt I love silver even black ones they clean up fairly easy. Good job

Yeah, blackened silver cleans up really easy, unless it has been in saltwater for a long while.

Denver mint was not yet opened. The mintmarks on some seated can be kinda wonky I guess. I think Ive got an 1876 or 77 with that same mark

Congrats on two great coins. I like that black patina, and have dug a few coins that look like that. I prefer to leave mine alone and not clean them (except to water them off). I like to remember them the way they came out of the ground. That's just me.
