I found this after a rain on a field I plowed along in southern North Dakota
I almost ran over it with my tractor
It seems to have a picture of a baby and some kind of animal like a badger or something
Thanks, SB
Thanks for resizing it, I am not skilled at the computor
The right side of the 2nd picture looks to be an image of a papoose
on a cradle board with it's hands sticking out and with
feathers in it's hair. I have fond other artifacts in this 30 acre field
after a rain came when I have tilled.
I found this 21 years ago
I am thinking it may be a ceremonial piece or maybe a charm.
Thanks, SB
I just asked some folks on another website and they all seem to think it's a hairpin and most likely from the Mississippian culture or something like that. It's all Greek to me, I know nothing about these things except that they are fascinating. Very nice find indeed.
A hair or other type of pin is a good guess. What came to mind for me was, if you flip it over back and forth quickly, the 'baby' is there- is not- is there- is not. So the resident shaman might roll it in his hand or toss it into the air to determine if one was fertile or not. It's just a guess, don't ya know.
Don't think it's a rib bone, and it sure does look like a tobaco leaf. That is one great find ya got there.Once in a lifetime if ya ask me..well done..Geo
I think the carving in the middle of the piece is not a leaf but a picture
of a badger or beaver something because it has four legs (two of them don't show)
I have found a few more pieces of bone with carvings on them (should I post them)?
After driving tractor in a field for 40 years and finding a piece every other year
I'll bet I stopped the tractor about 100 to 150 times to get off and look at something and it very seldom was anything
But when it was I was glad I stopped and climbed off of the old John Deere
Its an artifact to be sure. I was wondering when seeing weavings from out west if it might have been used to seperate out the weaving or pull it tight. Like they said could be a hairpin. A friend specialises in bone tools. I will ask him he has whole filint knapping kits with billets. I will shoot him a pic. Glad you came down off the john deere and please do not go to no till and start drilling like thay are doing here : )
