My youngest daughter found this today on a fossil hunting excursion. We have never found anything quite like it before. Most of the time we only find crinoid stems or brachiopods. This thing has little chambers(?) inside it---could it be the "cup" part of a sea lily? or something else? It looks like it has a stem on one of the sides.
Thanks for any help!

Hello Charmin, It is somewhat awesome how fossils will crystalize inside. Here is an ammonite fossil with crystals in the interior part. In the last photo you can even see one pretty good sized crystal.

It is awesome to find a fossil that has crystallized, Old Digger, and we very seldom find ones like that---love the examples you posted!!! Mostly all we find are concretions and crinoid stems........and my daughter said thanks for the help!! :icon_thumright:

I'm not certain what your daughter's mystery find is; but, I am reminded of this:

I don't know what the interior of one of these floats looks like . . . mine is intact, a smooth shell on the other side. Not a common find, I think.

Nice one Harry! The one my daughter found does look similar to your example.
The neat little chambers in the one she found just thrilled her!
She has been pestering me all evening to find out what it is....I love it when my kids enjoy stuff like this. Since I home-school them, we try to do a "science outing" once a week and find something to come home and research/identify.
Thanks Harry~~
