Ok, so someone's just gotta know what this is. I've found several over the last couple of years..different places but mostly along trails I believe. Walking or perhaps mountains biking trails. It looks more familiar each time but I still don't know..

Yup, that particular piece is called a ferrule. It provides the sealing surface between the line and the fitting.
