Definitely a German Mauser Model 1898 stripper-clip.

This find is more proof that very post-civil-war Military stuff frequently gets dug up at the same spot as civil war Military relics. Alderan33, that statement is NOT directed "at" you. It's for the education of all diggers who read the What-Is-It forum. I can't explain how your 1898 German stripper-clip came to hit the ground in that civil war Cavalry Camp field, but it definitely is what it is. My guess would be war-surplus sales to American civilians by dealers like Bannerman.

Anybody who is doubtful can go here and see the ID (with photo) showing the very-exact match.

Here's a shot of one of my Turkish 8mm Mauser stripper clips with the rounds in it. Note the similarities between the clips.

after ww1 and 2 german rifles where sold cheap all over the use and lot of people own or owned one at the time my self own one with 20,000 rds and just as many stripper clips
