I can't help with the ID but I resized and cropped the photo, maybe this will help.

My best guess is a musket escutcheon. (thumb plate) I do have one with two prongs. If that is right it's a very neat one. Never seen anything like it.

the snake might be a "goose head /neck" loin tends to be british symbol

Both the lion, and the serpent/duck head is predominately a British thing, the serpant is usully the "S",attachement to a style of buckle and the lion head is often on buckles of another style.Although I have never seen one like this it strikes me as a Key hole cover to a padlock?

Yes, I'd say that could be right because the back "attachments" don't seem to match each other... but I but they would be close to the remains of a cover. It just seems too cool not t be something real cool. Interesting find.

A better view of the post(s) on back. The upper post is broken off at the base. Not sure why the upper post would be off center...

I think if you look at the backs of some old keyhole covers it will be very close. (of center like that, or at least made the same)

Wouldn't that put it upside down as a keyhole cover, if the pin on the back is the pivot point?

Unbelievable! Now I've located someone who has found this exact piece - on another treasure forum, and is trying to identify it. I'm hoping to connect and get more info on his and maybe it will help us "tell the tale"... thanks for all the input so far! FYI- I also found a partial pocket knife with "Robert E Lee" cut into the brass at this site. I'm guessing from a soldier that may have served under him??

Just purchased an old trunk that has this piece as the lock cover. Do not know anything about the trunk at this point. Looks like a steamer trunk.

That's incredible! Mystery solved and thank you so much for the pics! Mine, i believe, was from a small confederate campsite where we also found an etched "Robert E. Lee" pocket knife and block "I" button among other unique items.

Could you post a pic of this pocket knife; I'd love to see it. Thanks, Breezie
