Brass railroad lock found in Louisiana

FOUND THIS TODAY. It's from the Morgan Louisiana and Texas RR. Been wanting to find a cool lock because I'm a big time Houdini fan. According to online research this Railroad existed around 1870. This will display nice with the bag tag I found last year which was from the New Orleans and Opelousas RR 1850's which was bought out by the ML and T RR. Charles Morgan was the owner of the RR and the town I found this in was named after him, Morgan City. There is some patent info written on the back but I'm not able to make it out. Any tips on preserving it? Leave the chain on?

Very nice railroad items. If the lock belonged to me, ( and I have found some with the chain on ) I would leave the chain on it. I like to remember my finds as they came out of the ground.

Great job love RR stuff I found a tag from a RR that ran from 1895 till 1903. The guy fro the Ann Arbor historical society wanted me to donate it. NOPE These finds are very collectable and really mice. Thanks for the post!!!@!
