Brass "whats it"

Brass "what's it"

I found this the other day (Northern IL) and have no clue what it is.

It's size is approximately 1-3/8" square

Any ideas?

Wild Guess .. But remember seeing something like that long ago...
Reins for team of mules, there was metal loop (drawbar) under bottom that leather straps went thru and screw knob on top to tighten straps into bundle.... Used one for the left side reins and one for the right side reins, as I recall.
Just a guess though.
