I found this cast brass object at an old (1900) home site. It is about 3" tall. Another guy on TNet has one that is just like it (posted here) with a different design. We can not figure out what these things are used for. Any help is appreciated!

I posted a picture of the object along with a brass hinge, so that you could see the hollow rear of it.

PS: The prevailing theory is curtain rod holder... I am not convinced.

Thanks in advance for the expertise!

Possibly a lantern hook as well

With the hollow back I think it would be used in a location where the back couldn't be seen, which then brings curtain rod holder into question. How about a hand towel holder on
stand along with the pitcher and basin? The towel hanging on a rod something like the one in the photo, only the brass hooks mounted flush with the edges. Perhaps not this fancy, but with a shelf on top to hold the soap, something like that.
