Looks like just that. Someone was trying to create a brass sphere. A hard thing to do. What it was for? Who knows. A friend of mine casts brass all the time in his artwork.

The decorative tops to horse hames.

It sorta looks like a ball foot for a piece of furniture. Except most of the time they will have other pieces so they actually roll.

Very rough casting, perhaps for a clock or something else needing a small weight. It looks like the next step would’ve been to drill and tap the protrusion.
