British 60th Regiment of Foot Button

Hello All,
This was my first signal of the day. When I flipped it out
I assumed it was a British button from the American Revolution era, but the condition gave me 2nd thoughts, 8 hours later, I'm home and I've got a positive ID. It's the real deal: A British 60th Royal American Regiment of Foot circa 1774, 24 MM

I also got a nice civilian pewter, and a thin Seated Dime
Maybe 1842/1847,
some other stuff too,
can't type anymore, I've just dug my best find to date.

That 60th regimental button is one reason why I swing on Colonial sites. I want one badly! Great job, Herbie, on recovering a Revolutionary war button.

Congratulations on the 60th Regt. That is one button I would love to find because they were stationed at the fort my hometown is named after (Fort Ligonier) during the French & Indian War. Of course they didn't have regimental marked buttons during the French & Indian War. Yours is a 1st pattern, 1768 to 1772, and about as good as they get in dug condition!

I would hunt that spot hard in case there are more

Yours is a 1st pattern, 1768 to 1772

I initially said that too, but given the information in the link posted above is from the same source they must date 1768-1774 (or later) and when a more precise time frame is given it's because of the location the button was dug.

I don't know about that, older equipment and uniforms were used long after they were issued, so "where they were dug" is not doesn't necessarily date them that precisely. This is a B60.a. in Troiani's book, and he states that they many were found at Crown Point and Fort Ticonderoga, both of which were occupied by the British after 1772. Yet he still says this is the 1st Pattern, circa 1768 to 1772, which I take as the years they were manufactured, not necessarily worn.

In other words, the one on his website, is circa 1774 because that is probably when it was lost, based on the site where it was found. But in his book, he says 1768 to 1772 because that is the date range the 1st pattern was manufactured. Regardless a great find by Will

Yes, that is the same thing I said.

Maybe he'll jump in and say for sure, he's just over on the USA thread.

And yes, buttons definitely stuck around. I actually have found many of the early issue of one button, and only one of the 2nd, and these sites are post war.
