There is an editorial on BPL in the January issue of Popular Communications. BPL consists of using the power line grid to provide Internet services, apparently by using radio frequencies over the power lines. Interference with amateur radio may be avoided - it is still experimental - by notching out the amateur band. But what about metal detectors? Will BPL increase the EMI problem to the extent of eliminating metal detecting in urban areas? Right now the first trial run of BPL is being conducted in Manassas, VA.
