Verified as a Brown Bess Buttplate by the local museum curator (Fort Ashby, WV). The picture looks like "CDV", but it's actually "CDM". I'm not sure what it means, but Fort Cumberland Maryland was 13 miles away. Could that be it? I've only found one other online, but the owner of that one didn't know either. I donated it to the museum, but it always bugged me what CDM meant. Help!😁

I don't know, I wondered that myself. Captain Daniel Morgan was the postmaster at the Fort, I'd like to think it was his!

I don't think it's initials:

No additional info in either of these postings.

Most likely an Unit or Regimental marking. Hard part if to figure out what CDM meant as a marking.
