Bucket List-er & 1600's Club!

Was out detecting & came across this WAFER thin peice with a greenish tint... couldnt ID at the time, but tucked it away in my "save" pouch. After I got home, & began to clean my finds - This little piece of metal was toasted,, black & green crust all over,,, Unidentifiable & and almost cracked in half... Thinking it was just trash or scrap copper - I soaked it in Lemon Juice overnight - thinking that I had nothing to lose. In the AM, the gunk was gone, and there were markings!!! Very toasted, but after magnifying glass key markings & research... It turns out to be a... [h=4]Louis XIV, Sol de 15 Deniers, 1698 !!!![/h]:headbang:Its actually made of Billon - a silver, copper (and maybe other alloy) mix - That's why it was green! Holy sh*t, I almost tossed my greatest find to date!! lol

1st 3 pics are of my coin - the last is an image from the net.

That is an awesome find !

Awesome!!!! I recently found one and almost tossed it as well. You realize you likely just made your first 1500s coin find as well???? If memory serves most of these were struck on late 1500s douzains. IP will straightened us out again

Ahab8 - Thanks for that info..WOW! :occasion14:

It really is an incredible little piece of history. I was shocked at how thin they are. I came so close to tossing it. Luckily I was on a super old site and checked everything over very well.

That's a fantastic find - but you are giving me nightmares about all the things I've tossed in the past! Congrats and thanks for sharing.

Congrats on some great finds the coin is over the top

Wowsers that is olllldddd!

Might be just me, but the orientation of the fleur-de-lis is wrong in relation to the orientation of the shield. Something doesn't appear right. The basic ID seems fine, but is this a counter-stamped piece? Great find, either way.

Incredible find! Congratulations! I can't imagine what its like to be a member of the "1600's club"...very , very exciting.

French Coinage

That might make sense, and add a bit to the history if this is what it is. First example looks close.

They are deceiving because these are restruck over 1590s douzains 95% of the time. So you often see a bit of the original coin. And there's a ton of different variations of these billon coins

Outstanding find. I'm sure glad you took it home before throwing it out.

Cool find, I have a couple billion coins, one is 1710 and quite nice shape, the other has zero detail.

They were struck on a variety of coins, mostly Douzains, many 1500s, but also some much older, and some not even French. The coin posted above is likely not good enough to determine what the undertype is, but pretty safe to say it's at least a 1500s coin because I don't recall seeing any 1600s Douzains used for these.

Mine I consider one of my best coin finds as well.
