Buckle Help Needed Please - Smaller buckle found in an old field. Not as big as a belt buckle so I am thinking maybe a boot buckle or some sort? Inscribed on the back with PAT DEC 16 1879

Any ideas would be gladly appreciated

Thanks in advance :)
