I found another buckle at my 1830's site, this one had a round sheath on one side, I was wondering if this could help identify what these buckles went to, back packs or harnesses or like a belt or what its about two inches by one inch I suspect it was once brass plated because ive found another similar buckle with some brass intact

It is what is called a roller-buckle, and was/is used mainly (but not ONLY) on horse-harness equipment. I said "is" because roller-buckles are still being manufactured today. Therefore they are almost impossible to date down to a narrow time-period. They are not used on a human's belt. The "roller" (the spin-able iron sheetmetal sleeve covering the side of the buckle opposite from the tongue) allowed a leather strap to slip smooth-&-easily through the buckle, for quick adjustment.

Note: The Filson Company has utilized roller buckles on their belts (for people). Filson belt buckle.jpg *These modern roller buckles are made of brass.
