Buckle help

Found a pretty old buckle - it looks hand-forged to me - but can't tell how old exactly. Any ideas?

Looks "horsey" to me. Hard to age because they have been used for generations.

Looks like a big D buckle...brass with iron prong. Probably horse tack from 1900 onward. Usually the prongs are long gone on older ones

No brass buckles like this are hand forged, they are all cast. Hand forged usually applies to iron, one cannot heat brass, copper, or bronze and bend or forge it, it will break. They have been casting brass buckles since the bronze age. (thousands of years)

Using brass buckles & iron or steel pins was common.

Thanks Crusader. I seem to recall that it would cause a galvanic reaction and one metal would corrode. On the other hand I certainly could have been dreaming in that science class. LOL
