Hello All,

Been out for a few days from the forum here because I was back in Old Virginia hunting with my Dad. :)

Finds were slim, but we added to our wheat penny collection. :) Dad found a nice Native American artifact and I got what looks like a key for an old mantle clock. We hunted for several days smack dab in the middle of God's Country. I posted some photos of the cabin below (no running water or electricity) with oil lanterns on the table. Gives ya a new appreciation for life in the 1800s for sure!

One of the highlights was us taking a WILD ride on a narrow muddy road that his 4 x 4 almost couldn't handle (I mean, this was a Tractor-Only-Type-Road! :o). Then 45 minutes down this road and crossing a creek twice, skidding through a cow pasture up and down hills and places where the road had washed down a steep ravine on one side of the truck, and we came upon a tall oak tree fallen across the road (and nowhere to turn the truck around--and still a mile from the site we were going to hunt. ::) ).

So rather than walk a mile to the site (and afterwards have to put the truck in reverse for a mile to find a spot to turn around), I walked to another cabin that the owner had given us keys for in search of a chainsaw. And I found... a DULL Axe ::)

So I chopped away at that sucker for a long time and finally it gave way and we dragged it with the truck and heaved it over the ledge.

By the time we got to the site we were hunting that day, we were exhausted... But it was a Beautiful spot:

Other highlights included me playing music and singing back-up with a bunch of fellers on some Bluegrass and Old Time Music, eating the Best Food God ever put on the face of the earth, searching for an 1800s Mill in the woods with Dad and finding a mill stone in the creek :) and plenty of rest, relaxation, and good family time. Here are some more photos of the area we were...spilling over into the first reply.

Nice Pics! Any idea what that thing uner the photo of the grinding stone is? I found one very similar to it this year at a seminary. Mine is made of copper or brass and was painted gold and then light green, the cylindrical end is also internally threaded. Is there threads in your find as well?

WOW............ Gorgeous scenery! Isn't it great to get out in lovely country with some nice fresh air.
Good to spend time with your old boy too, those moments are priceless.

WOW, what a place! I LOVE that old Red house!
How could anybody NOT have a great time there?
Glad you could do stuff like that with Family.
I wish just ONE other person in my family detected!
Great pics, and awesome story!
Gotta enjoy every minute of it!

You know, I just looked at it--and mine's internally threaded on the end as well. :icon_scratch: Maybe it's a finial off a lamp instead of a clock key... :P

You call him Buckle Dad... thats awesome! :)

Either Buckle Dad or Iron Dad, depending on whether it's 60 degrees or 35 and sleeting while we dig. :)

BB, tale your best day hunting, multiply it by 100, and that's what you came back from VA with. HH.

BB,
I will echo the chorus on this thread. What a great place to hunt with your dad!
I'm glad you appreciate it as much as you do. It speaks volumes about the kind of guy you are.
Congratulations on a world class family adventure!

Best of Luck in '09,
Mark

Hi BB:

I think that the key shaped item is the "handle", or part you grasp and turn, for an old electric lamp. I found a similar one, with a female thread on the end, in my grandmothers yard.

Another great post, as usual. The care you take to produce interesting, high quality, photo-rich posts is evident and always appreciated.

P.S. Would have LOVED to hear the bluegrass. My wife and I are huge fans, mainly the newer generation of bluegrass musicians. String Cheese Incident, Leftover Salmon, Yonder Mountain String Band, Hot Buttered Rum String Band.

Thanks for your kind words.

If you ever run across an album of Bluegrass Music entitled "Ride" by the group "Canebreak"--snatch it up. They're a bunch of friends of mine that released an album that has since become Legendary at the Galax Fiddler's Convention and other events. (in the form of burned copies, etc.) I have an original that one of the band members gave me, and I won't let it out of my sight.

Band broke up after one album--and they've all gone their separate ways now.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

BB,
You can't ever photograph the memories of spending time with POP, nor can you place them in a treasure case, the feelings only remain in the HEART, reminds me of the trip a few months ago My Dad & Mom & My wife and I went to a camp ground that we frequent as a child and boy did my Dad & I Catch some Fish the memories will never be forgotten.

My Dad, 73 years young

Wheat penny. :P

Lots of those found on the trip. But good to hunt with BuckleDad there and then bring him back here to hunt in KY the following week. :)
