Hello All,

I got out yesterday for a dawn to dark hunt. Hit two sites, working the first one out completely. The second site was a tough one, and it is due for a return visit.

The first site was in a corn field. Pewter items and small bits of brass were coming up occasionally, but overall the site was tiny, and good targets were sparse.

I filmed a LOT of targets hoping to catch something good on video. Here's one of the less impressive things I dug. (Later in the day, those 20 minutes of footage paid off! :o)

I did manage to get a nice Eagle Button which turned out to be an "I." Shank is broken, but the button is otherwise intact. Backmark is "Scovill Mf'g Co. Waterbury" Here's a nice photo which I call "Eagle Button Harvest."

After an hour or two without a dig-able signal, I decided to move along to site #2--a bean field. ;D

When I first got to the spot, I could see brick and glass in the field. I started digging and got tons of targets--but they were all ALUMINUM! ??? For a site that had been vacant for over 60 years, that seemed odd to me. As my pockets swelled with can slaw and pulltabs, I started the curse the farmer under my breath for Drinking and Tractor-Driving. After about an hour and a half, I took a break and started to think about the situation...

I came to the conclusion that since there was So Much aluminum there--and only there--that the dirt had to have come from somewhere else and been used to fill in the cellar hole. After my break, I adjusted my gameplan and focused on the outer areas of the site. That's when I finally started to dig some keepers. First, a brass thimble came up. Then pewter pieces--including an elaborate spoon handle, the two pieces of which came up in different places on the site.

I walked up on a small cent laying right on top of the field--but it was a 1944 wheat. :P Then all of a sudden, I walked up on this--right on top of the ground:

Here's the video I took:

After all that excitement, I got my best signal of the day--and I managed to catch it on video! (It was VERY windy outside.)

I pounded the site another hour or so, and then as the darkness approached, I made my way to the car. These keepers were hard-earned today, as evidenced by the Mountain of Crappe I dug:

Here are all the finds for the day:

The Eagle "I" Button:

The well-worn Braided Hair LC that someone had unsuccessfully attempted to Hole. ::) (I have been fortunate. It was 16 years before I dug my first dateless LC last week--and now I have TWO of 'em in TWO weeks :D [what happened to the "good old days?"] :P)

And the beautiful gold-plated ring. You can easily see why I about had a heart attack when I walked up on it in the field!

Best Wishes to all of you this harvest,

BB,

Looks like a hard day of digging but it paid off with the nice finds. Great job as usual.

great post the videos are perfect

Nice finds Buck. The video of the large cent being dug up was great. Makes me want to go out for a hunt right now.

You really work hard for your finds, Buckles. That's a lot of iron you dug there! I know that's what it takes to get the good stuff out of those fields.

Congrats on your large cent and Infantry button!! Your ring would have temporarily stopped my heart too. I gather anything that gold looking out in a vast field is not a common occurrence. :o

Appreciate the videos too.

Another fine post!

Beautiful pictures, awesome video and fantastic finds! 8)

Gold or not, that ring is GREAT, and that button is a keeper for sure! Congrats on your second LC too! :icon_pirat:

Thanks for taking the time to do the video, BB! :icon_sunny:

Nana :)

Great finds and post! The button and LC are super nice, I wish my ancient processor could handle the video. :(
In your "finds for the day" pic you have two similar objects (circular) in the upper left corner. What are those? I've found several and have always wondered.

I believe those are grommets off of some material; a tent, a tarp, etc.

Great post!! Thanks Buckleboy.

I noticed the button. Someone on another post was really excited about an "I" button, so it must be special. Check it out. Good hunt. Monty

Well, they've been ID'ed as "parasol clips." But the more of 'em I find, the less certain I am that that's what they are...for several reasons...

1. I've found these at sites where the Poorest of the Poor lived.

2. Some of these are so small that they'd perhaps be parasol clips for a parakeet. :P

3. Someone also ID'ed these as "hat ventilators"--whatever those are.

So I think the jury is still out, but I certainly find a lot of 'em. I think I've gotten 5 or 6 myself this year--and the others in my team have found 'em too.

Far from my second LC! But it is my second Dateless one. :)

Thanks for the reply Nana--and you're right, the ring is great. It's old, beautiful, and it got my heart pounding in the bean field yesterday.

Great digs BB  hope you got a few free cobs of that field

I'd rather have the Silver than the Maize kind. ;D

You weren't joking about the wind, with my earphones on I thought I was there :D

Nice haul of goodies.

WAY TO GO "BB". Very nice finds. I really like that ring also. You sure
did have to work for those and you deserve it. The video's are great as
well. I think I'll have to consider going out to some farm fields in my
area. I have never done that.

It's going to have to wait several weeks as I'm having surgery on my
left hand on Thursday from a work injury.

Congratulations again, and best of luck in the future. I'm sure we'll be
hearing more from you on that area.

Very Cool Vid. Congrats on the LC and the button!
