Hello All,

I got out yesterday for a dawn to dark hunt. Hit two sites, working the first one out completely. The second site was a tough one, and it is due for a return visit.

The first site was in a corn field. Pewter items and small bits of brass were coming up occasionally, but overall the site was tiny, and good targets were sparse.

I filmed a LOT of targets hoping to catch something good on video. Here's one of the less impressive things I dug. (Later in the day, those 20 minutes of footage paid off! :o)

I did manage to get a nice Eagle Button which turned out to be an "I." Shank is broken, but the button is otherwise intact. Backmark is "Scovill Mf'g Co. Waterbury" Here's a nice photo which I call "Eagle Button Harvest."

After an hour or two without a dig-able signal, I decided to move along to site #2--a bean field. ;D

When I first got to the spot, I could see brick and glass in the field. I started digging and got tons of targets--but they were all ALUMINUM! ??? For a site that had been vacant for over 60 years, that seemed odd to me. As my pockets swelled with can slaw and pulltabs, I started the curse the farmer under my breath for Drinking and Tractor-Driving. After about an hour and a half, I took a break and started to think about the situation...

I came to the conclusion that since there was So Much aluminum there--and only there--that the dirt had to have come from somewhere else and been used to fill in the cellar hole. After my break, I adjusted my gameplan and focused on the outer areas of the site. That's when I finally started to dig some keepers. First, a brass thimble came up. Then pewter pieces--including an elaborate spoon handle, the two pieces of which came up in different places on the site.

I walked up on a small cent laying right on top of the field--but it was a 1944 wheat. :P Then all of a sudden, I walked up on this--right on top of the ground:

Here's the video I took:

After all that excitement, I got my best signal of the day--and I managed to catch it on video! (It was VERY windy outside.)

I pounded the site another hour or so, and then as the darkness approached, I made my way to the car. These keepers were hard-earned today, as evidenced by the Mountain of Crappe I dug:

Here are all the finds for the day:

The Eagle "I" Button:

The well-worn Braided Hair LC that someone had unsuccessfully attempted to Hole. ::) (I have been fortunate. It was 16 years before I dug my first dateless LC last week--and now I have TWO of 'em in TWO weeks :D [what happened to the "good old days?"] :P)

And the beautiful gold-plated ring. You can easily see why I about had a heart attack when I walked up on it in the field!

Best Wishes to all of you this harvest,

Awesome job on the video's Buckle's,what is that, some kinda hat cam? Anyway congrat's on the Gold even though it is plated but still a nice find.I've got 4 LC's and not even one $%&#@*# number on any of them,I feel your pain ;D And lastly the Button.....Beautiful Dig my friend, still on the wish list, but hey....I just started this hobby for real only a couple year's ago,so I think I might have some time left ......Excellent Post, keep the Vid's coming and pound the field's!!!

Nice presentation Buckles... I guess I didn't realize that you use a Fisher detector. It sounds like and just allover reminds me of a Compass detector that I used to own. Large Cents are always welcome, you know me.That gold plated ring is nicely crafted. Good job dude. :icon_sunny:I think that wind just arrived here in Pa. It is howling right now.

BB, Congrats on your finds, I really like your videos.....................Lee

Another top notch post Will, yes, the wind has arrived in Southern NJ also, and fanning the flames of a forest fire! :o

The Infantry button is in decent shape, getting the plated ring is always nice also, but anytime you find a large cent makes it a great hunt and the other knicknacks are always welcomed.. I knew there was something I did not like about field hunting in cool weather and now I remember, WIND. :)

Buckles.......What an excellent post! The sound of your voice (and breathing) on the ring find video was a riot. It's the "upper" when you see it, then the "downer" when you pick it up. Many of us know that one. None the less it's a great find whether it's solid or plated. The LC clip was cool as well. You pinpointed/recovered that perfectly. I love how it popped right out of the hole on the first shot! No easy feat with a cam in one hand. Looks as if you also took home 3 to 4 gallons of iron/relics to boot. Looks as if that was a hunt for the memory bank, for sure. Great post!! Best of luck on all your future digs.........Will

Yep. You said it perfectly about the ring. Little let-down, especially considering (as CaptnSE said) how Rare it is to see Gold in the fields...

I like the pinpointing of the 1266--one of my favorite features of the machine. You can pinpoint Tiny. Hard to hold the camera steady, and remember where to dig. I thought it was cool how it came out of the hole with one scoop too. That coin was such a reward for dealing with such a trashy site.

Nice finds!! I am willing to bet you were a little cold with the wind we have been having. What do you do with all of your iron that you find? As it stands I have a crap load of it in my garage taking way more space than it needs to.

Great job brother! It was just like I was there instead of being at work. Rock on!!! :headbang:

You've got time--and you're just about Guaranteed an eagle button or two here soon. (I know that's the type of hunting you do, so you'll get one for sure. :) )

Sorry to hear about your LC's... I've been lucky, but I'm worried now that I'm on a dateless streak. Hopefully my next one will be a good one.

The camera is actually just an HP camera that I'm holding in one hand and trying to keep it steady while digging with the other. I bet I look mighty funny standing out there in the field with a camera trying to keep it focused on the ground... :P

Hey thanks buddy. Sucks that you guys are getting the wind... At least with big fields there are no dangers of trees crushing my car on a digging trip (like this one from the Buckleboy history books: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,79009.0.html).

Why on earth did you let your Compass go? Those were pretty incredible machines.

Ye olde 1266 has never let me down. Had my first one for 16 years, no repairs. This is 1266 #2.

Regards,

Buckles
