Is this a Civil War bullet, and if so what type? The diameter is .57 inches and it is .98 inches long.

Thanks

Your civil war .577-caliber Enfield "Minie-bullet" has a conical base-cavity, so it is Confederate-made. British-made Enfield minies had a "plug" (wide, flat-bottomed) base-cavity. The difference is important, because both the Union and the Confederacy imported Enfield rifles and Enfield Minie-bullets from Britain, so when you dig one with a "plug" base-cavity it could have been carried by either a yankee or a Confederate.
