Looks to be a 38 cal slug, or known as 38 S&W, late 1800's to early 1900's seems about right, this is still produced with appox same weight but flat base , someone with more firearms smarts may even be able to tell you the type of weapon that fired it based on the lands and grooves .

Just pick these shell up today for this gun 38 S&W double action 3rd model cira 1884

Thanks, 38 it is. I was fooled by the bullet (vs case) diameter designation.
