🔎 UNIDENTIFIED Bullet

Wondering if anyone can help me ID this bullet that I found on and 1860's farm site. It is fired and appears to have some rifleing scoring. Diameter is about .522" and length about .783". Short and very pointed. Base is smooth.Thank you for any info.

Closest I could find was a 50 caliber Smith, diameter .524, length .86, weight 360 grains. It was manufactured under Poultney's patent #40,988 in 1863. The case was made of brass foil and paper with a perforation in the base. From Handbook of Civil War Bullets and Cartridges by Thomas and Thomas.

It's a 44 Colt from that 1860's period, the measurements are off because its fired.

Thank you for the information, nice to have found a bullet that is not modern. Most of the bullets I find in Wisconsin are modern.

A lot of short bullets are a type of pistol bullets

.50-70 Government was loaded by Winchester with a 360 grain bullet as the .50-70-360 from about 1876 through the 1890s. The bullets in the cartridges were paper patched and ran about .522 to .525.
