21-year-old university student Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas had booked a bungee-jumping experience yesterday from the Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, Brazil.
The organiser’s operatives carried her to the edge of the bridge and, just after she was hurled from it into the ravine below, spectators were heard frantically shouting “the rope, people, the rope!”
Tragically, no-one had attached the elastic rope to her harness and she plunged more than 130 feet to her death.
Statistics show the fatality rate for bungee jumpers at around 1 in 500,000 jumps (roughly the same as for skydivers) but there have been 7 deaths so far this year, mostly arising from faulty equipment or operator errors.
I can help feeling that the bare statistics are akin to referencing the overall safety of air travel without acknowledging the greater risk if you fly with Aeroflot.
RIP Maria.
