Buried Jar of money...should I use detector?

Sounds like a great adventure. Look at it this way. It's fall, if you have time, there is no better time to clean the basement out. No bugs, it's cool, etc. You may only find an Indian Head, but one you can talk about for the rest of your life. There may be a real treasure waiting on ya. Then it's happy dance time.

Sure wish I was there to help ya.

Don't forget that your detector (and mine X70) will probably read OL when it passes over the jar lid. Just dig it. Is it in Appalachin,
Owego, or Endicott (my old hometown)?

Good Luck.

Its in Apalachin

Have you detected the property where they hold the Appalachin Firemen's Field Days, yet?

Why not use a probe used for outhouse bottle hunting. You can get the feel for it quickly and tell when you hit glass or plastic as opposed to rock or soil...

When you hunt a house like that, take a friend and a latter. Seven feet is heck of a climb when your finished hunting. A friend is good when the walls fall in on you. Someone has to call for help. Ever hear of the story where two guys go hunting around old farms. When they arrived there in their Jeep, the passanger got out and step down unknowing into an empty well. Needless to say, that hunt was over.

I would start detecting the stone walls of the foundation. Seems a lot easier than moving a bunch of stuff off of the floor. If you don't find it in the walls, then get aggressive with the obstacles and detect the floor. If it seems like it's easier to just give up, keep in mind that other t/hunters probably thought the same...therefore the treasure might still be there. Good luck! Niffler

Just read through this post not knowing that the topic is about a site about 10 miles from me.(JC). Pretty cool. I've been in the exact same predicament around here! It's true about wondering "what if". I really gotta get back to those sites!

A lot of good ideas on this post. I will add that I have found coins in mason jars in cellars. They were maybe 2" below the soil surface and I got an overload signal. All other signals were iron
"nails". I just skipped over the iron signals. They were found next to the wall. So work the perimeter first and skip all small iron signals. Also check the stone wall for signals. Frank
