Trying to date a button I found with "Hortsmann Bro Co Phila" on it. Its a Va. staff button. Just cant find the backmarks date anywhere.

Thanks but this is a site that I had already found but was told that the dates for this particular backmark was incorrect. :icon_scratch:

I found a mistake in the Scoville dates on this link posted by fortbball9, but the Horstmanns I thought were correct.

What is incorrect?

W. H. HORSTMANN / PHILA. 1820-1850
W. H. HORSTMANN / NEW YORK 1820-1837
W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS 1843-1863
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / PHILA. 1864-1866
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / NEW YORK 1837-1847
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / PHILA 1859-1863
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / NEW YORK 1850-1852
HORSTMANN BROS & ALLIEN 1852-1877
HORSTMANN BROS & DRUCKER 1844-1850
HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA 1893-1935

SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY 1850-1865 I think its a typo maybe should say 1850-1965. Many other links keep copying this same error. I have this backmark on post 1902 Great Seal buttons.

I dont know if we can trust that link. How could they make such mistakes? The bigger problem is that is has been copied by many other sites.

Like fortbball9 says, a picture of the Horstmann backmark will help.

I cant seem to down load pictures right now but I will get one posted soon. The highlighted backmark is exactly whats written on the back of this button. I dont have a button book yet and I asked someone and they are the one who told me that "Horstmann" button that has "Bro" in the backmark was post war. He metioned he used the Tice button book. This is real good news to me.

I thought that I had a CW Era Maryland Button. But if you look close PHIL is missing the A.Makes it post CW.
You have to look close to every letter. One letter or mark means a lot.

Yes I know that is what I was pointing out.If you look close the backmark is their but it has Horstmann Bros. & Co. Phila. On my button I was reading the same thing but I wasn't looking close enough Phil. on my button is missing the A.I never seen that until someone else pointed out to me.
On the SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY backmark on the buttons that bigcypresshunter has pics of there is a dot
between Scoville and Waterbury and if you look at the link below there is no dot between Scovill and Waterbury.I am not sure if that is the difference in what makes it CW Era or post war.I am really new to trying to date buttons with backmarks and it seems to be very difficult of all of the different types of marks.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=310133370395

So anything that I can learn about these and all of the other backmark will help me out a lot.So thanks to all of the input of this post. DirtyMike I am not trying to take away from your first Question but it seems to be a lot of questions about backmarks.

I cant trust a backmark site that cant even spell Waterbury correctly.

The button I found does have an underlined capital A after Phil.

Don't know what that would be. An underlined capital "A" as part of "Phila" has me baffled.

Its the "A" at the end of Phila. It reads PhilA

Here's a pic that was already saved of the front if it will help any.

But the "A" is small. There is a dot between the H in Horstmann & the P in PhilA
