Button back mark help

Trying to date a button I found with "Hortsmann Bro Co Phila" on it. Its a Va. staff button. Just cant find the backmarks date anywhere.

That is one thing that I don't understand.There are so many different things about backmarks.
These backmark sites should have the backmark the exact way it should appear on the button so people could be sure of the date.the difference between CW Era and Post war might be just a dot a letter,something small like that.If anybody has a good site that gives a little more info than the site posted earlier,would you please post it.

The site you posted is the best one that everybody uses. It has even been copied by other sites, errors included. I am now questioning whether we should be using a site that misspells Waterbury, amongst other errors, when spelling is so very important. I wish we could find a better site. A site with 20th century military button backmarks is lacking)

On the SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY backmark on the buttons that bigcypresshunter has pics of there is a dot
between Scoville and Waterbury and if you look at the link below there is no dot between Scovill and Waterbury.I am not sure if that is the difference in what makes it CW Era or post war.I am really new to trying to date buttons with backmarks and it seems to be very difficult of all of the different types of marks.

Re: Here's a pic that was already saved of the front if it will help any.

But the "A" is small. There is a dot between the H in Horstmann & the P in PhilA

Mike, did you post a pic of your Horstman backmark in question? Did I miss it?

Yes a work in progress may be a good link if he would date them. He states it is only a supplement to Tices. I started a list of 20th century Great Seal button backmarks. I didnt realize how many different ones there where. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,212590.0.html
