Good afternoon all,
Last weekend was doing some "prospecting" in a vast wooded area in southern Virginia.
Found a few square nails, three shotgun shells dating to the late 1800's and "THIS"
which I ~believe~ to possibly be a button? But any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Just for some perspective, this area is in the middle of BFE and has had no current usage for years.
She shells were about 3" deep and the "button" was just at 7"

The images are scans of the item with a half dollar as a size reference.
The front of the item has hash marks, like a huge tic-tac-toe pattern (visible in the scan)
The back has no visible characteristics.
It is not magnetic and seems to be complete copper.
It is fairly thin, about 1/3 the thickness of the half dollar.
As can be seen, three holes through the item, smaller is dead center and two larger aside each small one.

As always, thanks for your help!!

Looks like a home made "wizzer toy" that you loop a string through, wind up, then pull the ends of the string to make it spin between your fingers.

I have an 1858 Canadian half cent I dug that someone made into one. It had winner stamped on one side in 3 places.
Really depressing to see an old coin destroyed like that even though it wasn't worth a whole lot.

I appreciate the reply "Ism" and have to admit there is a strong resemblance, still holding out some hope that there may be more to it though.
The location and thin construction is making me wonder if it could really be a toy. Again, going to let it brew here for a bit before I mark an official "solved".
Amazing how quickly you guys get info on this stuff, this place is a great resource.
Thanks Again!!
