Added new images. Looks like there is a shield on the bottom right side. It says in the Alberts button book, that it is a one piece Navy button, but this button seems like a two piece. :icon_scratch:
The button in the book was made by Robinson and CO., which was in Attleboro mass and were made from 1826 and 1827. I found it in Mass.

I hate to say it but that is definitely not a Navy button, what you think is a shield is actually the base of the bust that Crusader pointed out. My best guess, would have to be a political commemorative button celebrating either a political candidate or possible military figure. I would be able to identify this if only I had my books with me down at college. The reason it may not look exactly like a bust or figure of a person is because of the slight push in the face. I hope this helps direct you in your research.

Interesting you are both seeing a face, I see an eagles neck and face and two wings clearly. :dontknow:

Your button is also a two piece dome button not a one piece button. Can you make out any form of backmark on the back of the button with the shank as that could help us in identifying it. Try rotating the button about 45 degrees from the orientation in your pictures and compare that with a quarter for instance and compare the silhouette of George Washington with that of your button. I would guarantee that this is a bust..... which could also make this rarer than any plain navy button. Note also that the button you pointed in the book is one piece with the shank being on the same side as the design. Hope this might help.

Are you messing with me? I don't see George Washington on this button, what I see clearly is one of the funny looking eagles they use on military buttons. The eagle that looks like a chicken with a long skinny neck. I also see two wings on each side of the neck of the eagle. :dontknow:
I can't make anything out on the back, no back marks. :-[

One my iPhone I see the eagle, shield, and the background lines that match the pic you found in the book! Nice id!

:D It took me a while to see what they are seeing too. I also see what you are seeing - so I don't know :icon_scratch: But maybe this will help you see what they see-

Here is just a reference bust left to see the concept-
big

and here is one of your pics that is in the position closest to appear to have the bust left-

I now see how it could look like a bust. ;D
I think if it were a bust, then between the eagles head and wing you would not see more lines, it would be the middle of the head. Funny how we all see differently. I posted a couple of more images while it was wet to see more detail. We know it is an eagle and a two piece button. I havae found a ton of War of 1812 buttons in this area, so I suspect it is from that era.

I think the confusion arose because he's not holding the button in the same 90 deg orientation as in the pic in any of the pics. Definitely a match, but if you hold it a certain way you may even see Alfred Hitchcock! :laughing9:
