i dug this button today and was wondering if any one here can date it please
there are no markings on the back at all
no letter or number on the shield

That is a Jacksonian button, they were popular about the time Andrew Jackson was president. They came with many designs, but were always small in size with a thick rim . Here are some examples of Jacksonian buttons.
