Hello searchers,

My friend found this button and needs help with an id. It's an eagle with 15 stars. It measures 23MM and the impression of the eagle can be seen on the reverse. He thinks it's a one piece button missing the shank. He's not sure if it's military or civilian because he was unable to find a match in the button books. Any id help would be excellent! Thanks for the thoughts!

I am pretty sure the Eagle backmark buttons are civilian. I have several, similar but not exact to your friends. Probably mid to early 1800’s. Nice.

Nice find, interesting my first thought wasn't that it was a button face.
It's too small to be a horse rosette, so depending on the thickness it may have been a decorative medallion from a document box, mantle clock decoration or possibly from a drawer-pull. :icon_scratch:

I researched the significance of the 15-Stars and this is what I found...

"The 15-star, 15-stripe flag was authorized by the Flag Act of January 13, 1794, adding 2 stripes and 2 Stars. The regulation went into effect on May 1, 1795. This flag was the only U.S. Flag to have more than 13 stripes. It was immortalized by Francis Scott Key during the bombardment of Fort McHenry, Sept 13, 1814. In 1795, two stars were added, representing Kentucky and Vermont, bringing the total number of stars to 15. ... The 15-star flag flew over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and inspired the writing of the National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner."

Dave

PS. Happy Independence Day!

It’s more than semi solved. It’s solved. That’s the same button in alberts book as the one you showed.
