not sure on what it is but like you mentioned the backmark dates it from 1850-1865 so it is probably Civil War era but not positive it was a uniform button. I'm sure others will chime in and give you a better ID, but anyway congrats on a great and interesting looking button

RCS? PCS?

Definitely CW era button, not sure if uniform though. I was thinking US Revenue Cutter Service (RCS), Scovill made a button for them with that backmark, but the front doesnt match yours at all.

Nice find though, looks to be in great condition.

My two cents worth, the backmark seems to match closest to 1880's to 1900 , civilian button. Ref: Tice's Dating Button book

sorry about the mixup on somewhat dating your button to 1850-1865. I found out recently through our fellow members and their posts that I am still learning things as well. I forgot about the raised versus indented lettering on the buttons. I have a button that I thought was CW era and it also has Scovill Mf'g Co Waterbury on the back but again the letters are indented, not raised. Thanks to all the fellow members that show us that we need to further research before we come to conclusions.

Still a nice button though and should be proud to have found it.
