Button ID

[HIGHSTRUNG]

A friend dug this yesterday. Trying to ID it all I can make out on the backmark is PLATED. It is a flat one piece as well. Thanks in advance and HH!

Looks to be Civil War era Navy button...
But I’m no expert

Unless I have overlooked it I can't find your button in Albert's or Tice's books. All of the ones even vaguely similar have stars around the edge. Now, watch someone post it with the correct ID!

In Albert's book, page 32, item number 56 is a close representation of your button. The shield is a bit different..

I need to add it was found in a confederate camp site. I found this palmetto button 30 yards from his button. There have been several block I's and SC buttons found there as well.

How large is the button? If it is a vest or cuff the design may not look exactly the same as a coat would.

I don't have the exact measurements but I'll say about the size of a nickel.
