Is it bone or could it be a wood back button? They used wooden backs in the late 1700's and through the early 1800s. Nice find.

Its like a metal holder for the button, the two fit in together.
 

It's a 2 piece button, the bone is the back and the design is the face. There's probably silver plate or gold gilt under the corrosion and may clean up well. Bone or wood back buttons are fairly uncommon to dig and always a good find. Separating them would be breaking the button.
