Ok the button i dont think is anything special as i have found around 15 of them....But......this is the first one that has a motif.....all the others have been slightly domed and smooth...
The flash has highlighted it and in natural light it does shine a gold colour...
It looks like a "2" but cant work out why or what exactly it is....

Probaly more horse furniture :headbang:

Next is my second thimble from this site......just interested if anyone can place an age on it.....

The other one i found is almost half the size of this one...pinky finger one according to her who should be obeyed......i found the first one near all my 1800 coin and buckle finds...

The one here in the picture i found in the old spoil from when they dug the ditches out......this would have been done a fair few years ago ....

Cheers all...

So with the button maybe the others have worn off or some were plain others with motif?

Livery buttons don't wear off the design but they do loss there gilt. So must have been plain.

Some of the other buttons
The one in the front row next to the livery button is pretty cool....looks like a 4 leaf clover motif on it...

Next pic is some of the buckles from the same field....
The broken one in the front has me intrigued for its date.....

Most of the buckles are horse harness. But the one you pointed out is 18th Century shoe buckle :icon_thumright:

So to summ up this particular field
Found a James 1st Half groat approx 1604? ish
17th century thimbles
18th century buckles and buttons...
And the 2 oldest finds came out of the spoil from when they dug the drainage ditches out........me thinks i need to concentrate more on those ditches.......

Can musket balls be dated by size and markings?

Just quickly crusader whats the best way to clean that livery button up?
without making it go "pufff"

Also i have just been reading that the history books say that a tsunami hit my coastline in 1607 and covered the land in a few feet of water.....and considering we are on the edge of some levels that would explain why the spoil from the ditch digging has produced the oldest finds....elementary my dear watson...........

Generally, (& its all I know) is the smaller ones are Pistol Shot & the larger Musket. As you say you can date them by size but I've never researched that avenue.

It doesn't look like there is anything on the button to clean.
