Went out today and forgot to bring my camera. I was locked on buttons today and found 4 flat buttons and this one with the eagle. The back mark is: Wise Bielby Hyde & Co No. 2 Extra Fine
diameter is 23mm. I didn’t find any bullets or coins. Good luck to everyone.

Nice one, Albert's NA 62D not sure of age but appears to be post War of 1812, 1818-1825 era. Excellent condition! My reference for the date is Tice's Dating buttons book, and American Miliary Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks and Dates by McGuinn and Bazelon - not a guess.

Those are great buttons!!!

I have many days where i dont find coins, but come home with a few buttons. I have a few theories why this happens, one of which is this:

Many people keep their machines in COIN mode. Most of the buttons fall into the "dead zone" (north of pull tab, south of penny)when in COIN mode. I think many buttons are simply discriminated out. I almost always hunt in either ALL METAL, or RELIC.

Nice looking buttons...pre 1812, that is too cool...Go back and get more...great job.

Now are there books on buttons? I would be curious to learn more about them.

Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons by Alphaeus H. Albert remains the best single reference.

Civil War Collector’s Guide to Albert’s Button Book by Daniel J. Binder is a handy little supplement.

Uniform Buttons of the United States, 1776-1865 by Warren K. Tice is also very good, especially for Civil War period buttons.

For backmarks, get either (or better yet, both) of the books cited by Don:

American Military Button Makers and Dealers;Their Backmarks & Dates
by William F. McGuinn and Bruce S. Bazelon

Dating Buttons, A Chronology of Button Types, Makers, Retailers & Their Backmarks
by Warren K. Tice

If you're more interested in other types of buttons— Rev. War, British military, civilian, etc.— let me know, and I'll recommend a title or two for those, too.
