I had bought my kids 2 Compadres for Christmas this year and was so impressed that I decided to buy me MY first Tesoro. I bought a Silver UMax and am really excited to start using it. I have had a few detectors over the years and I know that in order to know what the machine is telling you you have to get out and use the thing... alot. I have had a Whites 6000 D, a Fisher 1266, and a White XL Pro which I have not got to use yet. My Umax arrived today and I was wondering if there are any seasoned users of this machine out there that has discovered any tricks/tips to using this machine that might be helpful. Since it's my first Tesoro any advice that you could offer would greatly be appreciated!

GOOD HUNTING,
KEVIN

plan a retirement for the other brands. Tesoro is all you need

Congradulations on your Silver U max and getting the kids involved with the Compadres. I too, am thinking of the Silver U Max as a back up, one I could throw on my ATV or Motorcycle and not worry as much as my DFX. I see great reviews for this detector. I see there is no pinpoint and was curious if it is easy enough to figure out where to dig so that I am not cutting a huge hole? Thanks

The silver is very easy to learn. Dig everything until you learn what it is telling you. What do you like to hunt for? Are you coin shooting or do you like relics? For coins/jewelry, thumb the disc until you learn where items disc out. For relics I hunt with min. disc. and dig everything that gives a repeatable signal. You will still dig big iron (which is good), but small nails and iron will still be disced out or will make a popping sound. Don't give up on it. Give yourself time to learn it and you will love it. Good luck.

Pinpointing is a breeze. I normally X my target and most times touch the item with a probe if I try. You will be suprised how well you can pinpoint. If not sure, switch to all metal and it will pinpoint perfect.

Mine pinpoints very well.
All of the other pinpoint functions on the higher end Tesoros really just switch the detector temporarily to All-Metal.
You can do this manually but I doubt you need to. They do great without that.

As said before, and as it says in the manual...dig everything that gives a repeatable signal.
If it crackles and isnt very repeatable its probably not what you have the detector selected to hunt for.
The disc works very well on these.

I too bought a Silver Umax for a backup. But I find I am using it more and more. It is a fine little detector for the $$$. I have found it to be deeper than my ACE 250 or my RS 3300 too. No need for a pinpointer. Loudest tone is dead center every time! Back the sensitivitiy off until you loose the background clutter and learn to work the discrimination knob with one hand until you are able to reliably tell what the coil is over. It's easier than it sounds. It will discriminate iron nearly 100% and that is great for a "backup" detector. Good Luck, you will love it. Monty

Sounds good, I haven't heard of anyone that did not like the U max, lol. I think it will be the ticket!

i have never heard any bad remarks on any tesoro's

I thinkTesoro is the up and coming detector on the market right now. It seems to depend on old fashioned ideas but with a very fast processor. I like it. Monty
