This was found at an old mining site that was productive in the 1850's to 1910 range. Hoping to narrow down the year a bit and see if I can come up with the brand. Some of the name is visible, but, some letters may be missing or not what I think they are. What I see is: ?EIRCE & WO? Any ideas? Oh, there is still a square nail stuck in the metal at the top, so, that seems to fit the age, right?

Before I even learned the background history of where you found this shovel I was thinking 1860 - 70 Mark.
I've dug quite a few of these over the years on early sites here in Ontario that dated to the 1830s.

Funny, I never took the time to look for a makers mark though :BangHead: most had a design similar to yours.
