Hi everyone this is Matt again
the other day I found a old building site in the woods and came across a old brick that says on it W.W.CO on it. can anyone tell me who that company was and thank you to anyone who leaves a reply on this topic

A number of these seem to have turned up as isolated finds and in association with old fireplaces. They often seem to be firebricks. Like this one:

I cannot vouch for the veracity of this information, but one responder on Facebook said the W. W. Company manufactured these firebricks at a plant located between Dover and Strasburg, Ohio in the late 1800’s. The plant was said to have been built and run by Jacob Renkert around 1875-1880, but with the company named for the initials of the investors who financed it.

I did a little more checking and the company seems to have been renamed as Ironrock (The Ironrock Brick Company) around 1890, operating from Canton, Ohio. They also produced ceramic tiles and paving bricks. During World War I, under the leadership of Jacob’s son, Harry, the company went public and, through successive acquisitions and consolidations, became the largest manufacturer of paving bricks in the world. Ironrock pavers can still be found on streets throughout the eastern U.S. and they earned the Indianapolis speedway its nickname, “The Brickyard.”

Over the years I've picked up some old bricks for my wife's flower garden from the streams I have walked. I never thought of doing a follow up on the manufactor's info ! Good idea !
