It was used to unlock a lock. I agree padlock because most railroad keys have a logo on them....but ya never know...

There appears to be writing on one side but I can't make out what it says. Tried paper/pencil and power, no luck.

Looks more like a chest or cabinet key to me? Tony

Agree, the key is small, so I would say something like an attache brief case, or a locking box, I'm thinking the box for an antique cased pistol, or perhaps a roll top desk key, something small, but because it's copper, I'd say old also. My antique roll top desk has small locking doors and drawers.

Maybe even a casket key.

To be honest... this key could have been from a multitude of things... anything with a lock really.

I just think padlock because I have seen similar keys. but heh.

I believe the style is called a "barrel key" or a "Warded Barrel Key" and was also common for desks and locking furniture (gun cabinets, liqueur cabinets, etc.)

Notice first lock I pictured.

The key you found would fit this lock.

Notice how the bit protrudes past the end of the barrel of the key. Several companies had that feature, not just any one. However, if you can get it any cleaner see if you can make out the name Climax or Wilson Bohannan.

I'd put my money on a cabinet key. Your picture resembles them more than a RR key. If you notice the blade sticks out not good for RR locks. The comment on markings on the RR locks always having the RR company initials or name on them is not true . Some are duplicates and UPRR had tons that didn't have stamps or UPRR stamped on the bows. I have a ringfull from UPRR circa 1960s. I have boxes and boxes of them in my collection, and sadly only a small handful had any markings on them. If I can get some time freed up I'll post up some pics of various types.

OP,
If you could give some measurements on yours, it'd help a lot getting you a good answer. Bow length of blade etc.
