Can NOT believe this is happening!!!!Scratching & Defacing Goverment Property!!

Just found these in the last 2 boxes. Totally marking up the coins!!!!!
Perhaps the moderators could add a small note in the sticky/ Beginner Guide about Not marking in magic markers or permanently scratching the coins!!!! This is just a small portion. About 3-5 per roll. Sad!!
So this is what it’s come down to. Totally Ignoramous people!! Ruins the chance of some youngster’s chance of doing some innocent collecting.
PITY!!!!

I guess this person doesn't think a permanent marker is permanent enough. Soon some of the coins will have blood on them from when this person cuts themself, then the scratching should stop.

I don't like the scratching either.. especially since I mark coins too. That really does permanently gets rid of the collectiblility of the clads. Hopefully, this guy only did it on coins where they are already beat up.

I got some like that one time also, the only part that pi$$ed me off, was the fact they were all Brand New looking coins in the 2000's and had a huge x on there faces..I was hoping to keep them,

I hate marking coins. But I've learned to forgive the use of permanent markers on 'em (b/c they're not really permanent). But this scratching is horrible.

I have to wonder if someone was marking their coins or was it just a case of vandalism(If that is the correct term)? I've seen more then one proof that had multiple deliberate scratches across them. Totally senseless.

I can see using the marker but not scratching them up. At least the marker will come off.....Matt

I picked up a box last week. Those coins you show could've been my box. It really irritated me. At least 1/4 of the box was scratched like that. No need for it.

It used to bother me when people marked up coins because it ruined any numismatic value they might have, but not anymore. Now it bugs me because when I see a bunch of marked up coins I know the box will most likely be a skunk.

Not that it matters, but anyone who thinks it is OK to use a marker on coins with regard to damage is plain wrong. Again, nobody is going to pay you for your MS65 clad halves most likely, but rubbing out the marker mark will alter/ruin an otherwise original mint luster (if the coin had one to begin with).

But like other things some CRHers often do that damage the "sport" of CRHing, it just does not pay to get upset over this. Much more important things to worry about I feel.

Some brain dead fool even did that to some proofs I got recently. looked grate other than the scratches.

I just dumped 3 boxes that had TONS of those! I was almost starting to wonder if it was a sorting machine or something that was doing it because it was on SO many of them and the mark was almost identical on all of the halves that had it.

I just ordered 3 more boxes from the same bank I got those from so I'll find out this weekend if there's even more like that!

Oh, it gets even worse than that. I've seen multiple Halves with a hole punched or drilled through them. I even saw one Half where it looks like someone took a sander or some kind of power tool to the back of it, because the eagle was barely visible. On this forum, I've seen Halves with "Lombardo" marked on them.

Well, I know how I feel about this god awful tragedy, and I bet I can channel ole Obediah's spirit too......

First, My Response:

Relax, take a deep breath. It's only coins, there are literally 10's of millions of these halves floating around. It will be ok. I doubt this will become an epidemic.

Now for Obediah's Response (at least I'm pretty sure he'd feel this way):
