Dug this last year. With the foul weather I decided to start cleaning up about twenty pounds of iron. This ball is 1 5/8 in diameter and cleaned up beautify with electrolysis then blasted with walnut shell in my blasting cabinet. Its mangled twin is basking in a electric bath of lemon juice and salt. Kinda small to be a cannon ball, aint it?

Well, it was fired from a cannon and it is shaped like a ball, why not?

Actually it is called grape shot. The ones I have here range from 1.5 to 1 5/8.

No its not to small, the diameter of this is right for a swivel gun or small cannon. A cannon with a 1 3/4 bore would shoot a projectile with a diameter of 1 5/8. Here is a site with a similar cannon. http://www.sandiegohistory.org/journal/65october/cannon.htm As far as canister or grape shot the closest which would be American Grape shot had a diameter of 1 1/2 inches. Having a complete ball aloud me to also weigh it and there are no matches as far as the grape or canister. Arty
