Great to get out on the road this morning with Iron Patch over see our good friends, the Patriot and Hans R Dirty. Awesome day for detecting, rain clouds stayed away and the ground was giving up it's hold on a few relics. I didn't get too many good targets today worth keeping, but the worn out Georgie was all I could muster up for coin finds, the buttons were few but one was a French Marines, a few odds and ends and my prize .....a new one for me, a 8lb cannonball!

I took advice from IP on getting the heavy corrosion from the ball and gave some of the best "hammer-lovin'" to my new baby and I was more than surprised to see it turned out great.

Big thanks to Patriot and HRD for hosting a fine hunt!

Way to go, IH, on an overall great hunt! :notworthy: That cannonball definitely confirms you guys were on a fort site or battle ground.

Close to both, but definitely on private property.

Cleaned up good too. I wonder if Romeo will like that one as much as he did mine. ;D

It does look like an 8... not much crud. Mine I'm pretty is a 6... and had lots of crud!

I didn't have much crud, although, it doesn't bother me at all, the different size in the collection is awesome!

Like I told you on the phone, so much fell off mine after the first good crack I thought 20% had fallen of the ball. Being more wet where mine was really packed on the rust.

Good grief! I gotta get over there...must be at least one more!

Great to get out with you again and yes you both found balls lol. Maybe next time you will get that silver. Not bad for a 5 hour hunt though and I didn't think I would even make it, glad I did......cheers!

Nice find. When are you changing your names to ironballs?

I don't think we need to change our names, then there will be expectations of finding cannonballs all the time, and for me it doesn't happen all that often, last one was just over 2 years ago

collectively me and Patch can be known as the Iron Bros., that kinda seems appropriate in this case

Great hunt...congrats!!

Congrats on that 8 pounder IH...I thought it was bigger than IP when I saw them together..Good to have you guys over for a great day out... Too bad Romeo couldn't make it up...Funny that site was literally a last second decision which turned out to be a sweet one... :headbang:

I can promise you there are more cannonballs waiting.....I got few ideas when you come and then it will be up to you to get your coil over it and decide to dig it...... even the musketballs at that site were at about 11 or 12 inches...

really, that site is pretty big compared to a cannonball, I bet there are many waiting in the immediate area, it wouldn't surprise me to see another come from that site

there's tons of places we didn't even look at in the field, and it's big compared to some others we hunt in, can't wait to try it again sometime!

Don't drop it on your foot, I've nearly done that with mine. >.< Looks like you guys had a successful trip! :icon_thumright:

I'll bet there's another Spanish too. The musket balls were deep, but no question a target that should be dug. Where there is deep lead like that it's just a numbers game or getting a lucky one, because good finds have to be mixed in considering what already came out.
