I stumbled onto this case today. I know it's a 45-70, but I've never seen a centerfire without a primer. I'm hoping someone on here can give me some more info on it. It was found along the old Bozeman Trail, but I'm guessing it is from a later date than the trail was in use for. Thanks in advance. (Admins, feel free to move this if I posted in the wrong forum)

I don,t know what that is but I don,t think it,s a cartridge case.Does it have any printing on the base that leads you to believe it,s a 45-70?i,m not trying to make light of your find or any thing like that, just honestly don,t think it,s a cartridge case.Honest Injun!

It's definitely a cartridge case. I shoot and reload a replica 45-70 sharps, so I am familiar with them. The the mouth of the case has been mashed flat, so I can't measure the diameter. But case length is 2.10" (supposed to be 2.105"). The base below the rim is .522 (supposed to be .504). The case head is .608 (supposed to be .608). The measurements below the case head are probably off because of deformation. There is no primer, but it has definitely been struck with a firing pin. There are no markings on the case head that I can see. But without a doubt, it is a 45-70 cartridge case.

Scroll down a bit in the link provided, there was early 45-70 made, that primer components were inside similar to a rimfire but in the center.

Picture borrowed from the link provided, you can read a more indepth explanation on the link.

I have never heard of an inside primer before finding this. Thanks to ffuries, I'm pretty sure this case was made between 1873 and 1877. That was after Red Clouds war, and maybe before Custer was wiped out. I'm curious how it ended up there!
