Let's look at the auto industry on a global level...
How many cars from American companies are sold in Great Britain? Asia? Europe? Now, how many Japanese cars are sold JUST TO THE US?
I think that the US auto industry is not a viable global competitor compared to the Japanese industry. If the US auto industry wants to at least compete for the domestic market, they need only to look at what it features the Japanese cars offer that so many Americans will forsake buying American.
My thought about how to restructure the auto industry is: #1) Get rid of the Unions.
But that is just my 2 cents worth.
