Hey everybody,

Grew up on a farm and used to find lots of arrowheads. 35 years later I just went out on a whim today to hunt some artifacts in a farmers field and found what looks to be some kind of pestle maybe? His farm field is along a river, and he found many arrow heads over the years. I can go there anytime, and I will definitely be back.

we sure are seeing a lot of stones with holes in them here lately.

First look says cap stone to me.

Is the bottom of the hole concave and worn smooth.?

Is the rim of the hole straight and sharp edged, or wore down to a round edge? Is there anything about it that indicates use to you?

Welcome to the site and we all look forward to your future finds. I cant help you with this one but maybe next time. Good Luck, rock

The hole is a perfect half sphere, and has a very clean and sharp edge where the sphere begins. A thin layer on the top face flaked off ( around half of the sphere) and there is still a distinct edge there too even though part of that top face flaked off.

It's in a rock that is "pocket size" and looks tooled.

My guess is that they might have used this to start a fire?

Well if it were used for what I suspect, that clean sharp edge shouldn't be there. It should be wore somewhat from use. Not drawing any conclusions yet though. lets see what some of the experts have to say.
