I am not sure what you are asking..........Why do you need large trees? Why tried detecting it 3 times? Why would you think you would need to lay down. Are you trespassing?

het Fathead try to find the heavy traffic areas like from the cellar to the barn or to the well or any other out buildings . there are features around i'm sure of it but it might be that your just not use to seeing or identifying them as such. keep at it something will pop up .best of luck to you .

Sandman I am not trespassing. It is a public access location. I am looking for large trees as landmarks that would be places for people to hide or drop coins near. As for laying down, I meant actually getting down in the cellar hole. It is pretty well filled in with rubble. I am looking for some advice on how to cut down on my trash ratio. I believe that I could pound this site every week for a year and still have plenty of iron to dig, but I want a coin or two to date the site. I'm hoping it has not been picked over.

leddel,

Thanks, would the path to the creek still be obvious? About how far away from the structure should I explore? I know that some of you guys from Ct. do a lot of this, so I appreciate your advice.

Unfortunatly, cutting down on trash, cuts down on the good stuff. There is a lot hiding there. Usually 10-20' to the cellar walls will have plenty for iron. But that is where the house fell as well. Sifting works well there, but alot of work. Cellar holes in general are alot of work and trash is part of it. Good luck

The site could have been used for over a 100 years and you might find a coin at the end of its occupancy and that wouldn't tell you anything...

Clear out the trash and rubble and get to the bottom layer... :coffee2:

Sorry Flathead, I didn't know what you were asking, now I do. It is hard to visualize where all the buildings were years ago and sometimes the trees and bushes can help. Cellar holes are usually filled with trash like yours and it is work to clear away the junk to see if there is anything there to date the site an even that is a guess. Raking and sifting is not fun for me and I don't do that anymore just to find a coin, it has to be part of the adventure or you think of it as work. You can try a sniper coil to see if you might find something between the trash. Gold coins will read very low like around VDI 35 or so and that is where trash reads too. You might get some insight if you can locate an aerial photograph of the site too. At least that could show vegetation patterns. Don't forget to look for any loose stones in the wall too.

Good Luck. :coffee2:
