As promised, here are some more finds that I have found sifting an old farm cellar pit that was used since pre-revolutionary war days. However, the finds I found apparently span three centuries, given the square nails I found were hand wrought.

First the bottles..from left to right
"Dr. Munn's Elixir of Opium" Circa 1830's, "Hires Household Extract" Circa 1880's and a Sanford Ink Bottle

Here are a few notables..
Stone Marble, note the hand painted lines

Broach/Clip?

Bear/Mountain lion tooth/claw

Bone pipe stem

The rest...

Again, I am only through an 1/8th of a 20 x 18 cellar pit, the more I find, I will post.

My hat's off to you ; of all the cellar holes I've detectected I've never had the fortitude to sift one . Good job.

I have hit this location with the machine, but I don't have the patience of digging iron on every hit, sifting solves the problem. I have the location sectioned off with a grid. So far I am happy with the results, its a very dirty job that I fully enjoy doing. ..

The clip you dug is a suspender clip. Great finds!

Nice finds & patience to sift. I really like the tooth.

Congrats on splendid bottles! :hello2: Must feel great knowing there's much more to explore in that cellar! :hello2: Andi

Cool marble :)

If you're interested in the making, try researching "lined China" marbles. There weren't actually made in China, just the name given to them. They were made in Germany starting in the 1840s, many many imported into the US.
Some made in America, Ohio as early as 1844.

Thanks Jess, yeah I tried digging around for some information but there was so much of it that it made my head spin..lol. Hopefully I can find more.

Hey Dru, long time no hear!! Your painted marble is ceramic (fired clay), not stone, and are referred to as china or chinese marbles by collectors. I have a bunch if you stop by again I can show them to you. Give me a call if you get a chance.

From what I gather, the opium bottle is roughly in the $22-25 range, since its a narcotic bottle, they are always collectible. I just took a break from hunting to spend some time with the wifey.....and fishing...
