I was just having a conversation with someone about hardstone Celts and the absence of a source of that material in my area.. it's over 300 miles to the nearest source from where I am. So I thought I would post a nice hardstone celt from my area made from traded in material.
Then follow up by posting Celts and adze tools made from locally available shell that was used as an alternative. These are made of queen/pink conch shell.
Feel free to add your celt finds.

Gator, when you say 300 miles, where about does that put the source? I'm figuring its north of you, unless it was boated in. I'm 99% sure it wasn't brought in from Cuba. Lol! I never get tired of that Celt.

A lot more broken ones than full ones is normal.

This one took a hard whack but it was an adze.

Nice ones Gator. Did they ever make Coral Celts?

That's a good question.. I've personally never heard of one.. it seems feasible though.

"A lot more broken ones then full ones is normal."

An understatement for most collections, LOL!!!

They started with a piece of hardstone they broke down to a reasonable size then through a process of pecking with another stone and grinding worked them into shape. Some would get a final step of polishing..probably done with animal fat and hide.

LOL..oh...the heartache

That's a nice piece Gator. The material is similar to the greenstone that outcrops in my area. Those shell tools are interesting.

Here's a few of my better personal find Celts from Va. and Wv. The last one is a big preform, I think the material is Limonite or a low grade hematite.
